Weed control at Mornington-Marion Downs

Weed control at Mornington-Marion Downs

Mornington-Marion Downs has very few weeds. This distinguishes it from many protected areas in northern Australia which are under threat from significant weed infestations.

The small number of weed species that are present on Mornington-Marion Downs occur in discrete and isolated populations. Key species include Callotropis and Parkinsonia.

AWC's weed control strategy at Mornington is focused on eradication of the remaining patches of each weed through direct intervention (cutting and poisoning, hand removal etc), the implementation of catchment control measures outside our boundaries (to prevent reinvasion), combined with the application of strict quarantine requirements.

AWC staff removed more than 3,000 Parkinsonia plants and more than 8,000 Calotropis plants in 2013.
