Fire management at Faure Island

Trackside Buffel Grass sprayed to widen the fire break as part of AWC's fire management and weed control on Faure Island.

One of AWC’s primary fire management objectives at Faure Island is to ensure that no more than 25% of the Island’s acacia shrublands are burnt in any five year period.  Another objective is to ensure that no area is burnt more than once in any 20 year period.

Fire management activity has included the establishment of mechanical breaks which are maintained annually.  The encroachment of Buffel Grass has the potential to increase the fire risk on Faure Island because it creates a more continuous ground cover of flammable material.  Our fire and weed management programs are therefore carefully integrated: reducing the extent of Buffel Grass will reduce fire risk.
